Community Programs
Following is a listing of several local (Dallas-Fort Worth) prevention and awareness programs endorsed, supported, coordinated, and/or run by The Elisa Project.
Healthy Living Programs
Offered by The Elisa Project throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Healthy Living Programs have been approved by our Scientific Advisory Committee, comprised of leading treatment professionals in the field of eating disorders. Topics include eating disorder awareness, positive body image, and general nutrition. Please contact The Elisa Project for more information or to schedule a program as part of a PTA meeting, community group, professional meeting, or other gathering.
National Community Gathering™
The National Community Gathering is held annually during Eating Disorders Awareness Week. Taking place simultaneously in cities nationwide, the event offers information about the prevention and awareness of eating disorders while advocating for mental health parity. The Gathering, which can be held just about anywhere (restaurants, private homes, schools, churches, etc.), aims to promote education about eating disorders, prevention of this illness, hope for recovery, and healing for all who struggle.
Community Tract: The Elisa Project’s Annual Symposium for the Prevention and Treatment of Eating Disorders.
During Eating Disorders Awareness Week, The Elisa Project partners with UT Southwestern Medical Center to offer a Symposium on eating disorder prevention and treatment for clinicians and other healthcare professionals. In 2007, we opened it up to other interested community members. The Symposium features cutting-edge researchers and clinicians in the field of eating disorders, as well as staff from treatment centers around the country. For more information, please review brochures from previous Symposia; for questions, please contact The Elisa Project.
S.W.A.D.E. (Spreading the Word About Disordered Eating)
An established, student-led program for raising awareness of eating disorders and promoting healthy living among youth, S.W.A.D.E. began in 2002 at Highland Park High School. Since then, The Elisa Project has worked to expand S.W.A.D.E. throughout the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The 10-month curriculum includes an introduction to eating disorders; discussion of body image and the media’s role; education on early warning signs and approaching someone needing help or support; healthy eating behaviors; and information for coaches about athletes’ risk of eating disorders. If your school is interested in a S.W.A.D.E. chapter, please contact The Elisa Project.
Eating Disorders Anonymous Meetings
Meetings are offered weekly, free of charge, to anyone in recovery from an eating disorder. Led by individuals in sustained recovery, these meetings should not be used as a substitute for treatment. Please visit the Find Help page for assistance in finding a support group or treatment in your area.
